May 23, 2011- A recall effort targeting a southwestern Michigan lawmaker who sponsored legislation in the state House to grant more powers to state-appointed emergency managers has cleared a preliminary procedural hurdle.
Michigan Radio and WSJM report Monday that Berrien County election officials have approved a version of recall petition language filed against Republican state Rep. Al Pscholka (pa-SHOL'-ka) of Stevensville.
Organizers would have to collect more than 6,700 valid voter signatures to get the recall on the ballot.
Benton Harbor has an emergency manager and has become a focal point in the debate over the recently expanded powers. Benton Harbor city commissioner Dennis Knowles filed to recall Pscholka.
Pscholka has said he'll continue to stand up against "fiscal mismanagement and unchecked spending."
