The Tennessean: House committee voted 12-6 to limit teachers unions

March 22, 2011- The House Education Committee approved compromise legislation that would limit the powers of teachers unions in Tennessee in a 12-6 vote Tuesday.

Republican committee members agreed to an amendment that would let unions negotiate with school districts over basic issues such as salary and benefits — but not classroom assignments, work conditions or bonus pay — despite objections from Democrats and the Tennessee Education Association, which represents about 52,000 teachers statewide.

The vote sets the House at odds with the Senate Education Committee, which voted last month to eliminate union negotiations entirely.
